UNICEF Gender-Based Violence in Emergencies Resource Pack

Over the past two decades, gender-based violence (GBV) has been globally recognized as a critical human rights issue. Emergency situations increase the threat of many forms of GBV – from horrific acts of sexual violence to increased rates of intimate partner violence, child marriage and sexual exploitation – while systems of safety and protection are eroded.

Unicef’s GBViE Programme Resource Pack was created as a support tool for UNICEF country offices and partners. It will be used to strengthen and expand GBV prevention, mitigation and response efforts during and after emergencies.

Studio: RallyRally

I joined this project as a production designer working under RallyRally. From a small sample of content – and with some initial design direction – I created templates, styles, and workflows that helped the project run quickly and efficiently. These were exceptionally important to ensure that deadlines were met, and that there was no duplication of effort.

My experience working in publishing prepared me for some of the workflow-related challenges and allowed me to quickly identify and fill gaps in my own skillset. Some of the workflow processes that I put into practice include:

  • Templates and libraries;
  • Linking pages that appear multiple times to a master document;
  • Correct use of type styles, as well as Table & Object styles;
  • The use of Microsoft Word scripts to automatically style content and simplify the import into InDesign.

GUIDANCE BOOKLETS

The Guidance Booklets were my main focus, each of which averaged 180 pages. Eleven booklets were made, one for each kit.
